BRIDGEPORTConnecticut authorities say they had to tear down walls at a Bridgeport apartment building and use a payloader to remove the body of a man who weighed at least 800 pounds.
Officials say 35-year-old Alexandros Martakis died of natural causes Tuesday. Bridgeport Assistant Fire Chief Robert McLeod said Martakis weighed “close to half a ton,” but others say he was about 800 pounds.
The removal effort by police and firefighters took several hours Wednesday. Officials removed an interior wall in Martakis’ second-floor apartment and part of an exterior wall. The payloader lowered his body, which was covered with a blanket, to the street.
Neighbors called it a sad situation. The building’s owner says Martakis’ 10-year-old son was home when his father died.
